The Viroqua Area School District serves around 1,200 students across seven schools including Viroqua Elementary School, Viroqua Middle School, Viroqua High School, and four charter schools: Viroqua Area Montessori Charter School, Trillium Middle School, Laurel High School, and Vernon County Better Futures High School. Viroqua is also home to a Waldorf School and the Youth Initiative High School that follow the Waldorf model of education.

Charter Schools

The Viroqua Area Montessori School (VAMS) is a public charter school that shares a campus with the Viroqua Elementary School and Viroqua Middle School. VAMS offers seven multi-age classrooms serving 4K through eighth-grade students following a traditional Montessori model.
The Trillium Middle School offers a project-based learning atmosphere where students make many of their own decisions about their learning, beginning the year with teacher-guided projects and moving toward student-led projects. Students engage with the core standards in English language arts, science, social studies, and math. Effective communication, organization, exploration, and reflection are emphasized.

Laurel High School is a public high school serving students in grades 9-12. The school has a diverse student body and offers a wide range of academic programs. The curriculum at Laurel High School includes a variety of subjects such as math, science, English, social studies, and world languages. The school also offers advanced placement (AP) courses for students who wish to pursue college-level coursework. In addition to traditional academic programs, Laurel High School offers several extracurricular activities for students to explore their interests and develop their skills. These activities include athletics, music, drama, and clubs focused on topics such as science, technology, and community service.

Better Futures High School is a public, alternative high school that is part of the Viroqua Area School District. The school serves students who may have struggled in a traditional high school setting and offers a more personalized approach to learning. The school offers a more individualized approach with smaller class sizes and more one-on-one attention from teachers. They also have a focus on experiential learning with opportunities for internships, job shadowing, and service-learning projects.

Waldorf Schools

Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School is a private school founded in 1980 and is a part of the worldwide Waldorf education movement. The school offers education to children from preschool through eighth grade. Waldorf education is a holistic approach to learning that emphasizes the development of the whole child: body, mind, and spirit. The curriculum is designed to meet the developmental needs of the child with a focus on hands-on, experiential learning and the arts. The curriculum includes subjects such as math, science, and language arts as well as music, art, and foreign languages. The school also places a strong emphasis on nature-based education and outdoor learning.

Youth Initiative High School (YIHS) is a private, alternative high school and offers education to students in grades 9-12. The school has a unique educational philosophy that emphasizes holistic learning, social justice, and community involvement. At YIHS, the curriculum includes a variety of subjects such as math, science, English, and social studies as well as classes in art, music, and drama.
