A Wisconsin Agriculture Agenda: Policy Directions from a Broken Food System” The food system we have largely fails to do what we want it to. It produces lots of cheap food but not enough healthy food. It results in high amounts of waste, carbon emissions, and poor water quality. And it makes it very difficult for farmers to earn a decent living feeding the world. How can it be that something so basic can produce such bad outcomes for so many? What could we do about it, in Wisconsin and beyond? River Alliance of Wisconsin, for the past year, has been developing an answer to these questions by convening a group of experts who represent all the major nodes in the food system — from input dealers, to farmers, processors, restaurateurs, conservation professionals, and grocers. This group has done a deep dive into the challenges facing a more sustainable food system and identified some key areas for policy change. River Alliance’s Clear Water Farms Director, Dr. Michael Tiboris, will share the initial results from this project and the policy directions that might produce a less broken food system.  Dr. Michael Tiboris is a policy specialist in urban and agricultural water policy. Michael works directly with conservation agriculture groups in Wisconsin on both stewardship planning and implementation and on state-level water policy advocacy. He is a Nonresident Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, specializing in water development policy and lectures on water policy at the University of Wisconsin’s Nelson Institute and the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. His writing on water and public policy has been published widely in peer-reviewed academic journals, law reviews, policy reports, and popular media sources.
