Wet Your Line

With about 13,000 miles of streams across more than 5 million acres of public land, Viroqua is one of the top trout fishing destinations in the Midwest. Veteran fishers can attest to the high-quality angling in these crystal-clear waters, but for those looking to try their hand at fly fishing for the first time, local experts are eager to lend a hand. Driftless Curiosity offers autumn fly fishing courses for anglers of all skill levels, whether they’re wading into the streams for the first time or would just like to fine tune their technique. Additionally, Driftless Angler offers guided trips into the Driftless Area, ensuring less time spent planning and more time reeling in trophy trout.

Hit the Trail

The same landscape that created the Midwest’s finest trout fishing opportunities have also sculpted some unparalleled chances to hike or bike through the Wisconsin wilderness. Vernon Trails is a local nonprofit that hosts a vast resource of trail information for hikers and bikers, including maps, conditions, and amenities for trails like Sidie Hollow, Hubbard Hills, Rusty Ridge, Jersey Valley, and winter fat bike trails. Local bicycle shop Bluedog Cycles also highlights numerous trails in the area as well as bike trails in and around Viroqua. Bringing some young trailblazers along? The Valley Stewardship Network offers numerous activity sheets for your littlest explorers, teaching them the importance of conservation and helping them identify bird species, animal tracks, and plants.

Mushroom Madness

Fall is a fantastic time to get out and discover the incredible variety of edible mushrooms growing outdoors. But how can you tell which to pick and which to avoid? A discerning eye is needed — and the experts at Driftless Folk School can help. Their fall mushroom foraging classes teach beginners the basics of fungal biology as well as how to not only identify edible mushrooms in the wild, but also how to transplant and cultivate them at home!
